How long was a Stegosaurus? How long was a Brontosaurus?🦕… This is a fun hook to use before we study mass extinctions. Students predict lengths of 8 different prehistoric animals and then I unroll a twine that has each animal’s length marked on it. It’s sooo hard to wrap your head around how enormous some of the animals were! My 5 year old son loved this too ☺️

Need a fresh way to teach relative age dating of rocks to middle schoolers? The analogy of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich makes studying the Principles of Stratigraphy so approachable! I love this stuff and the higher-level thinking it demands!

After we take short notes on The Principles of Superposition, Original Horizontality, Lateral Continuity, Cross-Cutting Relationships, and Inclusions, my students are ready to begin applying these principles to rock profiles.

I love seeing the eurekas during this lesson! 💡 By the end of this lesson, most students are so confident about determining relative age of rock strata and events that they take on the challenge at the end of the lesson! I give them the mini quiz to check for understanding.

Most students think that a scientific law is simply a scientific theory that has been proven correct many times. This is not true! They are two different things!

How to teach this difference? 🎾 🐄 👨‍🌾 Students simulate how a scientific theory is formulated. It explains what happens by attempting to tell us how or why it happens. They also explore a scientific law (🎾). It describes what happens every single time under given conditions.

This group activity involves relatively easy prep and it really clears up the difference between scientific theory and law! I love using this activity before I teach the Atomic Theory or the Theory of Plate Tectonics!

Do you want to add some hands-on to your geology or rocks unit? 🧁 I call these clay cupcakes “tiny towns” — Mineralville, Gemtown, Strataville … you get the idea!

Students learn how scientists use rock coring to study rock strata in the Earth beneath our feet!

I love this activity because everyone gets a chance to “core” and I hear the oohs and aahs when they pull out their cores. Everyone gets so excited when I come around and cut open 🔪 their town to reveal the inside and many see how close their predictions are to the actual cross section.

This activity goes a long way to helping students understand what sediment layers are, why we are studying them, and how this sort of sampling is done in the field!

The follow up activity includes two videos of core sampling that show that we model this technique pretty well!

Need a simple way for your students to model why we have seasons? 🌻🍁☃️🌷Some people have a difficult time picturing the axis tilt and how the earth moves around the sun. Most people at first ask think that we have season because of the distance from the earth to the sun through the year.

This modeling mini lab is the perfect mix of simple and effective to address the kinesthetic learners and the misconceptions!

All you need are mini globes, a light/lamp, a Polaris star, and a simple orbit placemat that you’ll make.

✨ So special that we could see the Aurora from New Jersey last night. My students were tripping since we just studied the Aurora last week! All of them came skittering in this morning to tell me that they got a photo at their soccer practice! ✨

Index cards, mini LEDs, coin cell batteries and aluminum foil make for a great diagnostic activity for one of the first days or weeks of school when you need a crash course on how your students work and behave!

This light-up name plate activity will help you assess right away who learns quickly, who asks for a lot of help, who perseveres, who gives up, who spends wayyy too much time drawing or coloring, who stays on task, who gets up and walks around aimlessly, and much more! I literally take notes about my students while they are working on this!!!

One big theme this year was that the girls rocked it!!!
