📓✏️Tired of your syllabus being the moment you lose them?

I used to hand out a wall of text on day one and watch eyes glaze over before I even got to the grading policy.

So I switched to a doodle notes style syllabus instead — same policies, procedures, and expectations, but this time my students actually read it.

It covers goals for the course, supply list, grading and absence policies, beginning of class procedure, rules and consequences, and a note about good character — all in a doodle-notes format kids actually engage with.

I love that there’s a Syllabus Quiz built in too, so you can check what stuck.

It also comes as a Google Slides digital version — color and black and white, fully editable.

Cassiopeia Kits for my stars✨ (yes, I’m still in school in New Jersey!)

My students know that Cassiopeia is my favorite constellation, so I made them little Cassiopeia kits as an end of the year gift. I gave each student 5 glow-in-the-dark stars and a challenge: create your own Cassiopeia on your wall or ceiling and see if you can find the real constellation in the night sky ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wait…why is the bubble changing? 🫧 Students cover

Wait…why is the bubble changing? 🫧

Students covered the top of a bottle with a film of soap and then moved the bottle between hot and cold water.

The bubble grew.
The bubble shrank.
The arguments began.

After observing the phenomenon, students created particle models in groups to explain what was happening inside the bottle and then they participated in a gallery walk to critique and improve one another’s thinking. This is one of my favorite simple ways to help students think about particle motion!

Before this activity, many students think the plan

Before this activity, many students think the planets are spaced evenly throughout the solar system. 🌎☀️🪐

Then they build a scaled model using everyday objects.

Suddenly they realize just how HUGE the distances between planets really are—and how tiny most of the planets are compared to the vast emptiness of space. 🤯

Hands-on activities like this help students move beyond memorizing planet facts and actually visualize the scale of our solar system. This is always one of those lessons that sparks lots of “Wait… REALLY?!” moments in my classroom. Once students construct this model, we discuss how the sizes of the planets and the distances are to scale, but not with one another! It’s impossible to create a classroom-sized model that’s accurately scaled!
